TrueNAS SCALE TrueCharts App Catalog Launched

TrueNAS SCALE TrueCharts consists of more than 180  applications that can easily be deployed to the TrueNAS community. It is also free and open-source, allowing the community to build their own apps and catalogs at will. This is a fairly significant addition to the NAS market, as all apps have been streamlined with Kubernetes support. This is a big step in the right direction to bring Kubernetes to a wider audience.

TrueCharts was developed by the founders of those who worked on installation scripts for TrueNAS CORE, which was dubbed “Jailman.” iXsystems states that TrueCharts will build on the capabilities of Jailman, offering a user-friendly installer and a flexible platform, all of which is important for the average users and those who want a simple, flexible NAS solution.

TrueCharts is a completely independent project, and its community has spent an entire year developing tools, adding even more functionality to Kubernetes and the TrueNAS SCALE apps ecosystem. As an example, iXsystems indicates that all apps can be simply enabled with Traefik reverse proxy and Wireguard VPN capabilities. Moreover, TrueCharts adds a range of apps, including Vaultwarden, Handbrake, OpenLDAP, Photoprism, Pihole, and Syncthing, in addition to official apps such as Plex, Nextcloud, and Minio.

TrueCharts is designed to bring a solid framework to new Kubernetes users. However, they also want to demonstrate as many Kubernetes features as possible for more experienced users, specifically focused on customizability for those with specific use cases and systems. iXsystems makes this easy via their Quick Start guides.

Those with any knowledge of the NAS market know that QNAP and Synology are the usual go-to solutions for general consumers, mainly due to their accessibility and ease of use when it comes to addons and apps. TrueCharts certainly might lure some more casual NAS users away from those two companies. It will be interesting to look at their solutions more closely and to see what the company does and how it succeeds in the near future.
