Today at VMworld 2020, VMware, Inc. celebrated the 1-year birthday of VMware Tanzu with the announcement of expanding the portfolio, new support, and a new partnership. The new support includes VMware Cloud on AWS, Azure VMware Solution, and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. The new partnership is with GitLab.

Last year VMware announced Tanzu. At the time we said, VMware Tanzu is a new line of products and services designed to change how enterprises build software on Kubernetes. Among these technologies previewed at VMWorld is Project Pacific and VMware Tanzu Mission Control. Project Pacific embeds Kubernetes natively into VMware vSphere, which converges containers and VMs to establish vSphere as an application platform for the future, while Tanzu Mission Control offers a single point of control from where customers can manage all their Kubernetes clusters no matter where they run. Together, VMware believes that they will make Kubernetes more accessible to more enterprises, as they give operators more control and security, and developers more self-service resources and independence.

Since its initial announcement, the company has made several other announcements including adding NSX Service Mesh, integrating PAS into it, adding vSphere with Tanzu and Tanzu Editions, and a tightening of the integration on Dell EMC VxRail.

Now that it has been out and proven, the VMware Tanzu portfolio continues to expand with support for VMware Cloud on AWS, and preview support for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. While there is no Microsoft announcement today, the two companies are working together for a preview that should be available to early adopters soon.

GitLab is a DevOps platform that is delivered as a single application. VMware and GitLab announced a partnership that unites application developers and operations teams around the shared goal of fast and secure release cycles. That means users of GitLab with Tanzu will be able to streamline the development pipeline, and consistently get to production faster.
