Western Digital Announces New WD Red NAS Drives

Western Digital has announced several new storage products designed for small businesses and home offices that use NAS solutions. Among the launched drives is the company’s first-ever WD Red SSD and a 14TB addition to the WD Red and WD Red Pro HDD lines.


Western Digital has announced several new storage products designed for small businesses and home offices that use NAS solutions. Among the launched drives is the company’s first-ever WD Red SSD and a 14TB addition to the WD Red and WD Red Pro HDD lines.

The latest WD Red SA500 NAS SATA SSD features the necessary endurance to excel in heavy read and write loads, which are inherent of a 24/7, NAS environment. It supports OLTP databases, multi-user environments, photo rendering, 4K and 8K video editing. The new WD SSD is also optimized for 10GbE networks, features capacities from 500GB up to 4TB depending on the form factor, and can be cached in NAS systems to rapidly access frequently used files.

The WD Red NAS HDD (14TB) is designed for use in NAS systems with up to 8 bays and is ideal for small-and-home-office 24/7 environments while supporting up to a 180 TB/year workload rate. Built with enhanced reliability, the Pro version of the new 14TB HDD supports up to 24 bays and features 3D Active Balance Plus technology and error recovery controls with NASware 3.0 technology.

Pricing and Availability

The M.2 form factor WD Red SA500 SSD comes in a capacity range of 500GB to 2TB and is priced from $72.00 through $297.00, while the 2.5-inch form factor comes in capacities of 500GB to 4TB and is priced price from $75.00 to $600.00. Both form factors are now available in the US with a global launch slated for November.

The WD Red NAS HDD 14TB model is priced at $450.00, while the Pro version goes for $525.00. Both drives will be available worldwide in November as well.
