Today, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a series of software upgrades to their HPE SimpliVity appliances. HPE SimpliVity is the company’s well-known easy-to-use hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) platform. Effective immediately, HPE is rolling out HPE InfoSight to all existing HPE SimpliVity customers, as well as one-click cluster upgrades. In related SimpliVity news, HPE has also announced that they expect to complete the changes to SimpliVity needed to support HPE StoreOnce in 2020.

As we noted when we last looked at HPE SimpliVity, the main draw of SimpliVity appliances is their ease of use, and thus low cost in terms of IT resources. HPE is doubling down on making SimpliVity user-friendly by integrating HPE InfoSight. HPE first released their InfoSight recommendation engine early last year, and its focus has always been on reducing the burden of managing a data center by tracking metrics to predict and prevent problems. HPE InfoSight for HPE SimpliVity continues in that tradition by providing customers with automated support and alerts for complex problems. For issues InfoSight's AI has not yet learned how to address, the software also provides customers with global visibility and analytics detailing datacenter performance and utilization.

At the same time, HPE is also rolling out what they're describing as one-click cluster upgrades for HPE SimpliVity. This new feature should enable customers to upgrade firmware, VM hypervisor, and HPE SimpliVity all at the same time across multiple nodes in a single click.

Looking ahead to what HPE is planning for the future, the company has announced that they expect to improve SimpliVity’s data protection by adding support for HPE StoreOnce next year. When those updates come out, the company expects that HPE SimpliVity will be able to provide application-level data protection through their HPE StoreOnce platform. HPE SimpliVity will still be retaining its current backup and recovery capabilities as well.
