Western Digital Capacity-Enterprise HDDs Announced

WD has announced the addition of new Western Digital Capacity-Enterprise storage products data center portfolio, the WD Gold family, which now features new 16TB and 18TB CMR HDD capacities. Also announced is a new refreshed line of Ultrastar JBOD platforms and an Ultrastar hybrid storage server, which feature the Ultrastar 16TB and 18TB CMR HDDs.

Western Digital (WD) has announced the addition of new storage products data center portfolio, the WD Gold family, which now features new 16TB and 18TB CMR HDD capacities. Also announced is a new refreshed line of Ultrastar JBOD platforms and an Ultrastar hybrid storage server, which feature the Ultrastar 16TB and 18TB CMR HDDs.

The Western Digital Capacity-Enterprise products include the 20TB Ultrastar DC HC650 host-managed SMR HDDs and 16TB and 18TB Ultrastar DC HC550 CMR HDDs is dubbed by WD as the industry’s first commercial implementation of EAMR technology. They are currently shipping. Coupled with the company’s HelioSeal design and capabilities of deliver high-capacity solutions, these drives deliver superior areal density and allow customers to more efficiently provision and scale data center environments with their TCO value.

The new WD Gold 16TB and 18TB CMR HDD models are available now and ship with a five-year limited warranty. They are specifically designed for enterprise-class server and storage system use cases and are purpose-built for heavy workloads and big data applications. WD indicates that the new WD Gold HDDs feature enhanced levels of dependability and durability, and vibration-protection technology for improved, consistent performance. They can also handle workloads up to 550TB per year and 2.5M hours MTBF.

WD has also announced the WD Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 JBODs, and Serv60+8 storage server, all of which have been upgraded to support their enterprise-class 16TB and 18TB Ultrastar DC HC550 CMR HDDs. Available now, these new solutions can handle up to 1.836PB in a 4U form factor and are backed a five-year limited warranty. These Ultrastar platforms are designed to meet the needs of large enterprise customers, OEMs, cloud service providers, and integrators that require dense, shared HDD or hybrid storage. The Data60 and Data102 support up to 24 drive slots configured with SSDs, while the Serv60+8 offers a choice of CPUs, memory and drives. The company is planning to upgrade the Ultrastar platforms with to support the company’s DC HC650 20TB SMR HDDs some time in the next quarter.

WD has also has announced the following patents:

  • WD IsoVibe vibration isolation technology, which helps promote consistent performance, particularly under heavy workloads.
  • WD ArcticFlow thermal zone cooling technology, which enables drives to operate at lower and more consistent temperatures than conventional systems for lower fan speeds, reduced vibration, lower power consumption, quieter operation and ultimately higher reliability.
