Today Western Digital Corporation (WDC) introduced its highest capacity conventional magnetic recording (CMR) HDD with the Ultrastar DC HC530. The HC530 comes in capacities up to 14TB introducing a new, lower level of TCO for the cloud and enterprise guys. The new drive leverages WD’s fifth-generation HelioSeal technology to help deliver density, and better power usage per TB, and price per TB.
Big Data hasn’t stopped growing and if anything it has grown in size over the last few years with no decrease in sight. With technologies like IoT, AI, and machine learning only fueling the rate of growth. Companies need to store this data in a cost-effective way in order to gain insights from it. Enter the higher density HDDs.
Some time ago, WD introduced its 14TB SMR HDD. While SMR allows more density in existing drives it has not been widely adopted and is typically saved for certain use cases. For companies that have random write workloads and want drop-in simplicity, they want to stay with CMR technology. The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC530 offers this simplicity with higher capacity. The drive is offered in both SAS and SATA interfaces.
