Worldwide PC Shipments Growing Despite COVID-19

Last week, Gartner released their count of worldwide PC shipment estimates for the second quarter of 2020 (2Q20). According to the company, there were 2.8% more worldwide PC shipments for the past quarter than for the same quarter last year. Gartner was founded in 1979. The USA based company provides research and advice to companies around the world. They have a strong focus on C-level issues, including IT.

Last week, Gartner released their count of worldwide PC shipment estimates for the second quarter of 2020 (2Q20). According to the company, there were 2.8% more worldwide PC shipments for the past quarter than for the same quarter last year. Gartner was founded in 1979. Gartner’s numbers for the first quarter of this year showed a decline of 12.3% compared to the first quarter of 2019. The company attributed that decline to the COVID-19 outbreak. That 2020’s numbers have not only recovered from that slump but actually surpassed 2019s is an excellent sign. Surprisingly, despite lagging behind the rest of the world in dealing with COVID-19 in many ways, the PC shipment growth in the United States of America is beating out worldwide shipment growth. The USA PC market grew 3.5% year over year, registering its fifth consecutive quarter of growth. This is a noticeable improvement over the previous quarter’s growth of only 0.8%. According to Gartner, double-digit mobile PC growth in the USA was offset by a 44% decline in desk-based PCs in the USA. EMEA’s growth was even stronger. PC shipments in EMEA rose 20% in the second quarter of 2020, the most vigorous growth in this region in over a decade. EMEA shipment increases were large enough to offset the 8.1% year over year decline in Asia/Pacific market during this quarter.

According to Gartner, mobile PC growth was particularly strong in the worldwide market. There was no change in the ranking of the top 6 PC vendors worldwide. However, Dell did lose 3% of its market share, dropping from 19.7% in the previous quarter to 16.4% now. Apple also lost a tiny bit of market share, decreasing from 6.9% in the previous quarter to 6.7% now. Everyone else in the top 6 gained. The big winner was HP, gaining 3% and nearly catching up to Lenovo despite Lenovo’s 4.2% year over year growth in worldwide shipments.

In the USA, HP and Dell traded spots again, with HP now in the lead. Just like Dell last quarter, HP accounted for almost a third of all sales in the United States of America, with 32.8% of the market share this quarter.
