Today, XenData announced its upcoming Multi-Site Sync service for cloud object storage. The service creates a global file system accessible worldwide via XenData Cloud File Gateways. XenData was founded in 2001. The company focuses on public cloud and on-premises data storage systems.

XenData’s upcoming Multi-Site Sync service for cloud object storage is scheduled to be launched in May of this year. The service provides a global file system managed by what XenData is calling “gateways.” Each gateway manages a local disk volume that caches frequently accessed files. They predict that their software will be able to scale up to 2 billion files with up to 256TB of local disk cache at each location. The gateways are optimized for video files. Video files can get large very quickly, but the company is claiming there is no upper limit on how large of a cloud storage their software can handle. Companies often claim to have optimized for a specific use case, but XenData appears to have actually done so. Their gateways support partial file restore, and crucially, streaming, so you can start reviewing video footage right away without needing to wait for the entire file to be copied over.

At release, XenData plans to support Amazon Web Services S3, Hot and Cool tiers of Azure Blob Storage, and Wasabi S3. XenData says they will be able to support multiple accounts across multiple providers at release.

XenData plans to include the gateway software on two appliances when they release. The first is the CX-10, a 1 RU rack-mount appliance with a 10TB disk. The second is less traditional; XenData’s X1 appliance. We’ve covered the X1 previously. The X1 is essentially a customized Intel NUC, which means it’s just a little bit bigger than your hand. The gateway software will also be supported on other Microsoft computers running Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, or Windows 10.
