AMD has launched its new series of high-performance data center processors, AMD EPYC 7000 series. AMD is announcing the launch with support from a wide array of customers and partners including HPE, Dell, Asus, Gigabyte, Inventec, Lenovo, Sugon, Supermicro, Tyan, Mellanox, Samsung Electronics, Xilinx, and Wistron among others. The EPYC series is designed with up to 32 “Zen” cores and an unparalleled feature set, delivers greater performance than the competition across a full range of integer, floating point, memory bandwidth, and I/O benchmarks and workloads.
All the new EPYC processors combine security features, enterprise class reliability, and support a full feature-set. AMD goes on to claim that at “every targeted price point for two-socket processors, EPYC outperforms the competition, with up to 70% more performance in the eight hundred dollar price band and up to 47% more performance at the high-end of the market of four thousand dollars or more.” With a specific dig at Intel, AMD states that its EPYC 7601 one-socket system shifts expectations for single socket server performance, helping lower total-cost-of-ownership (TCO), providing up to 20% CapEx savings compared to the Intel Xeon E5-2660 v4-based two-socket system.
Features include:
High performance in a processor is always going to grab attention. AMD has stating that the new EPYC series hits record-setting performance and then released some of the record that the new processor set, including:
As stated above, several partners and customers greeted this launch with open arms due to the potential the new series can drive. Dell EMC specifically announced that it would be adding the new EPYC 7000 Series to its popular 14G PowerEdge Series of servers. The EPYC series can complement and augment the PowerEdge servers with its ability to support up to 24 NVMe devices on a single processor and further strengthening the security of the servers with the inclusion of Boot-Safe and Run-Safe technologies.
The EPYC 7000 Series includes:
