AWS Amazon Keyspaces Announced

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of Amazon Keyspaces, the company’s scalable, highly available and fully-managed database service for Cassandra workloads. Amazon Keyspaces supports the open-source Apache Cassandra Query Language (CQL) API, which allows customers to migrate workloads via the same application code, Apache 2.0 licensed drivers, and developer tools they currently use.

With Keyspaces:

  • users can easily migrate on-premises Cassandra workloads to the cloud without having to manage underlying infrastructure
  • there are no servers to manage, and no need to provision, configure and operate large Cassandra clusters.
  • manually adding or removing nodes and or rebalance partitions as traffic changes are not needed.
  • customers only pay for the capacity they use, there are no up-front investments.

Amazon Keyspaces also provides customers with single-digit millisecond performance at any scale, and can automatically scale tables based on actual application traffic with “virtually unlimited” throughput and storage. Moreover, it offers both on-demand and provisioned capacity modes, the latter which allows customers to pay only for the actual reads and writes performed by their application, while the former allows customers to optimize the cost of reads and writes for predictable workloads by specifying capacity per workload in advance.

Those who have existing Cassandra on-premises tables running using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) will be able to migrate them to Keyspaces via AWS services like Amazon EMR or open-source tools like the Cassandra Query Language Shell (cqlsh). In addition, Keyspaces can integrate with other AWS services, so customers can:

  • secure access to their tables using AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM)
  • monitor their tables using Amazon CloudWatch
  • manage their encryption keys with AWS Key Management Service (KMS)
  • automate the creation of resources with AWS CloudFormation
  • securely connect their tables to their Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) with AWS PrivateLink

Availability

Amazon Keyspaces is available immediately in the following areas: in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), US West (N. California), Europe (Frankfurt), Europe (Ireland), Europe (London), Europe (Paris), Europe (Stockholm), Asia Pacific (Hong Kong), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Seoul), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Canada (Central), Middle East (Bahrain), and South America (Sao Paulo) regions.
