Commvault Launches NetApp Scale-out Data Protection (SDP)

Today Commvault announced the launch of NetApp Scale-out Data Protection (SDP). The idea behind SDP is to offer expanded rapid recovery support for critical data across NetApp’s hybrid-enabled storage systems. NetApp SDP is powered by Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery software, hence the launching from Commvault. This marks the continuing partnership of NetApp and Commvault that has stretched back over the last 20 years.

Data is the new gold, or so the marketing teams say. Data is highly valuable and losing access, be it through an outage or ransomware, can be devastating to most modern companies. One solution that many have used is the cloud and cloud-based technologies. While the cloud is much more secure than originally thought, it is not foolproof and other steps along the way can go wrong. If data is lost companies can suffer financial or reputation loss and they need to avoid it or recover the data as quickly as possible.

Commvault and NetApp’s answer to the above is the SDP. Combining NetApp HCI, All-Flash-FAS and StorageGRID with Commvault software, SDP is said to deliver quick and effective deployment, easy scale, and on-premises object storage to efficiently protect critical cloud applications. Commvault supports array and cloud snapshots as well as a set of application and VM APIs. With this, the two companies claim they can simplify the protection of hybrid cloud environments by delivering fast and reliable RPO/RTO while incorporating long-term retention in an integrated cloud tier.
