Today, BackupAssist released BackupAssist ER. The new technology is an automated, disk to disk to cloud backup for Windows Servers. Notably, BackupAssist ER is standalone, purchase-to-own software with a one-time price, not the ongoing expense of a disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) option. The current CEO of BackupAssist, Linus Chang, founded the company in 2001. The company provides data protection software for Microsoft products, including Windows Server and Microsoft Office 365.

The ER in BackupAssist ER stands for Express Recovery. The software supports virtual machine (VM) Instant Boot. BackupAssist ER can manage full server and Hyper-V backups as well as more granular options. Recovery doesn’t have to be an entire server, but it can be much more granular and thus faster and more flexible. BackupAssist ER offers three data recovery methods: granular files – to any point in time, granular exchange – to any point in time, and granular applications – to any point in time.

Like existing BackupAssist products, the new one is primarily targeted at SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and is sold as a perpetual software license. Also, like other existing BackupAssist products, BackupAssist ER supports both local and cloud backups as well as bare-metal DR (BMDR), USB, and ISO mediums. Data is protected using AES-256 encryption to prevent backups from being corrupted in addition to several other safeguards against backup tampering and ransomware.

BackupAssist ER currently supports two of the three major clouds. Microsoft Azure and AWS are supported, as are other S3 compatible storage providers. According to BackupAssist, the company’s proprietary deduplication software can achieve space savings of up to 75% when compressing data, helping to keep the costs of paying for cloud storage low.
