Today Dell has announced a spectrum of updates to its enterprise storage portfolio, including updated version of OpenManage Essentials, OpenManage Mobile, and iDRAC. Dell also announced updates to the PowerEdge VRTX ‘cluster in a box’ solution in addition to Compellent Storage Center 6.5 and Fluid Cache for SAN which we are covering separately.

Dell OpenManage Essentials is an agentless hardware monitoring and management solution which will now incorporate Dell’s AppAssure data protection software in order to offer scheduled backups of server data, operating systems, applications, files, and databases. The new OpenManage Mobile can be used in conjunction with OpenManage Essentials 1.3 in order to provide mobile access to administrative functions across servers, storage, networking, and firewall systems. The new OpenManage Essentials 1.3 will also integrate with SonicWALL security appliances, while Dell's iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller is receiving new automated server self-identification, XML profile-based configuration, and automated rollback capabilities that can recall multiple firmware updates at once.

The Dell PowerEdge VRTX is a converged infrastructure solution which integrates servers, storage, networking and management within a compact single chassis for streamlined deployment to remote, branch, and small business offices. Building on performance and ease-of-use features available from the VRTX hardware platform which StorageReview evaluated in August, Dell now offers an optional redundant PowerEdge Raid Controller (PERC) for controller failover and additional VRTX server node choices including the 4-socket PowerEdge M820.

VRTX management systems share a common design with Dell’s Chassis Management Controller (CMC), providing VRTX users with a familiar management experience across local and remote VRTX deployments alongside CMC datacenter systems. VRTX now also supports graphical processing units (GPUs) to accelerate virtual desktop performance.
