Dell EMC released the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd2. We reviewed the original R740xd last year, and the new R740xd2 is even more laser-focused on storage. It offers even higher total storage capacities; the largest in Dell’s PowerEdge lineup.
Dell EMC designed the PowerEdge R740xd2 as an enterprise content server for data-intensive workloads like video surveillance, content delivery network, Microsoft Storage Spaces, and messaging. Boasting up to 364TB and 26 3.5” drives fit a lot of storage into its 2U form factor. Unlike the R740xd the R740xd2 has only front and rear drive bays. No middle drive bay this year. The front bays can hold up to 24 x 3.5” SAS/ SATA, or up to 16 x 3.5” SAS/SATA (HDD), plus up to 8 x 2.5” SAS/SATA (SSD) (in a hybrid 3.5" drive carrier). As you can see in the picture above, Dell has switched to a more traditional grid of drives from the single row used in the R740xd last year. The rear bay can hold up to 2 x 3.5” SAS/ SATA (HDD), or up to 2 x 2.5” SAS/SATA (SSD) drives, in a hybrid 3.5" drive carrier.
Like its predecessor, the PowerEdge R740xd2 supports up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors and the same range of operating systems including not only Microsoft Windows Server& Enterprise Linux, but also Citrix XenServer & Vmware ESXi. For memory, the R740xd2 has 16 DDR4 RDIMM slots. The handy optional front bezel is returning, and with the majority of the drives in the front bay, accessing them is convenient.
