Portworx released the second generation of their comprehensive cloud-native storage and data management solution for running stateful containers in production, PX-Enterprise 2.0. The two most significant updates are PX-Motion and PX-Central. Together these updates empower enterprises to overcome the biggest barriers to hybrid- and multi-cloud adoption by allowing teams to manage and protect containerized applications from a single platform.
PX-Motion solves the data portability problem for applications running on Kubernetes by enabling users to migrate application data and configuration between clusters across hybrid- and multi-cloud environments. Kubernetes users can migrate application data along with their Kubernetes pod configurations. Instead of having to manually follow a tedious and error-prone process. PX-Enterprise 2.0 enables teams to automate the workflows for moving state data much as Kubernetes and allows for automating moving applications. This should enable automated workflows for backup and recovery of Kubernetes applications, blue-green deployments for stateful applications, and easier reproducibility for debugging errors in production. As just one example, PX-Enterprise 2.0 supports running multiple WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla containers off the same underlying data volume, sharing state between hosts, without worrying about users colliding on the same file.
PX-Central is a single pane of glass for management, monitoring, and metadata services. It can span multiple Portworx clusters in hybrid- and multi-cloud environments built on Kubernetes. It should significantly simplify managing the state of their hybrid- and multi-cloud Kubernetes applications with monitoring and metrics across your entire infrastructure available in the Portworx user interface. Portwork claims that DevOps users can control and visualize the state of an ongoing migration at a per-application level using custom policies.
