Dell EMC Unity XT 5.1 Released

Dell Technologies has announced Dell EMC Unity XT 5.1, which brings new features and enhancements to enterprise software focused on improving business outcomes and workflows. This includes new capabilities for Advanced File, Block and vVol Data Services, Data Protection, Data Migration, Management, Multi-Cloud Operations, and Software-Defined Storage.

Dell EMC Unity XT is a mid-range storage solution used by thousands of customers, allowing them to store, manage, and protect their data. It also gives their customers a simple and agile way to digitally transform their business and remain competitive.

Here is a quick rundown of what to expect from the newest version of Unity XT, all of which seem to focus on simplifying and streamlining storage operations:

• Increased levels of data protection: more opportunities for protecting data with software enhancements and new features for replication, snapshots across file, block and vVOL data.
• Advanced file storage: deeper file data management, allowing customers to accurately report on file data with file correlation stats while taking advantage of unlimited quota grace periods.
• Software-defined: improved ability to run SAN/NAS workloads in the cloud with dual node HA configurations and higher capacity options
• Cloud-tiering: expanded file tiering destination options with support for PowerScale OneFS and support for the NFSv4 protocol
• Data migration: broader multi-protocol file management options that allow customers to flexibly manage migrations with REST APIs, Unisphere CLI, and Unisphere
• Hardware: support for 32Gb Fiber Channel host connectivity for faster data access

As we mentioned above, Dell EMC has positioned Unity as a mid-range storage solution. The XT version of the platform, which was released back in 2019, offered a huge boost in performance over the previous iteration and included upgrades like faster processors, increased memory, and higher capacity.

For example, top-end XT configurations can boast over 2.5 million IOPS and support a massive 16PB capacity. We previously reviewed the Unity XT 480F system, which can expand up to 750 drives for a total of 4PB and deliver up to 1.68 million IOPS.
