The Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF) has announced the general availability for Rocky Linux 8.4. Or more specifically they have announced the general availability for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) architectures. Not too long ago we sat down with Gregory Kurtzer to speak about Rocky Linux.

What is Rocky Linux 8.4?

IBM swallowed Red Hat a bit ago. When any company acquires another change is bound to happen. In normal IBM fashion, they took some time but shifted CentOS to CentOS Stream, making it move to an upstream continual release schedule. Rocky Linux came out as a great alternative. In fact, it is designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with America’s top enterprise Linux distribution now that its downstream partner has shifted direction. Rocky Linux 8.4 has hit general availability for the following architectures:

Architecture Minimal DVD Boot Packages
x86_64 X X X X
ARM64 (aarch64) X X X X

This has come about through several contributors but the company has received resources, financial backing, software, and infrastructure from organizations such as 45Drives, Amazon Web Services, CIQ, Fosshost, Fastly, Google, Mattermost, MontaVista, NAVER Cloud, OpenDrives, and GitLab.

The latest release can be downloaded here.
