Today at Dell Technologies World, Dell Technologies announced Quad-level cell (QLC) support for Dell PowerScale F900 and F600 all-flash models. The new 15TB and 30TB QLC flash memory drives are expected to be introduced in the summer, delivering up to 25 percent or better performance for streaming reads, depending on the workload, with all-flash nodes in the subsequent PowerScale OneFS release.
Dell Technologies feels that with the overall improvements in reliability and performance of Gen 2 QLC technology, now is the time to deliver QLC flash drives for the PowerScale F900 and F600 all-flash models. Powered by the PowerScale OneFS operating system, the new QLC drives are supported by the current OneFS 9.4 release. They will offer greater economics in performance and capacity for workloads such as financial modeling, media and entertainment, AI, ML, and deep learning (DL). With the 30TB QLC drive, raw density per node increases to 720TB for PowerScale F900 and 240TB for PowerScale F600.
PowerScale offers a simple scale-out storage architecture to speed access to massive amounts of unstructured data while reducing cost and complexity. The PowerScale F900 delivers the maximum performance of all-NVMe drives in a cost-effective configuration. The F900 and F600 are 2U and include in-line compression and deduplication. The minimum number of PowerScale nodes per cluster is three, while the maximum cluster consists of 252 nodes.
An upcoming OneFS software release will deliver a significant performance enhancement that will unlock streaming read throughput gains of up to 25 percent or more, depending on the workload. This upgrade is slated for the all-flash PowerScale F-series NVMe-platforms. Customers focused on high-throughput, streaming read-heavy workloads, ADAS for the automotive industry, and financial services will benefit most. Additionally, PowerScale will support NFS over RDMA (NFSoRDMA) to further accelerate high throughput performance, especially for single-connection and read-intensive workloads.
With OneFS’s non-disruptive upgrade framework, customers can upgrade their cluster software to gain performance benefits without adding hardware or making configuration changes.
