Today, Diamanti released a new major version of its hybrid cloud Kubernetes control plane and operating system, Diamanti Spektra 3.0. This comes as a surprise. The company released Diamanti Spektra 2.4 just two months ago, on April 1st. We did not expect to see a new major release so soon after the last update. Diamanti was founded in the early 2010s and provides open-source Kubernetes platforms.
What Diamanti sells under the Spektra brand name, is not just a single piece of software. It is an entire software stack. Spektra packages together Kubernetes, Docker container runtime, a CentOS Linux operating system, disaster recovery features, and Diamanti’s proprietary management UI.
Diamanti Spektra 3.0 software stack seems to be mostly focused on improving the management aspects. 3.0 brings both interface improvements and better support for complex architectures. 3.0 extends support to managed service providers (MSP) and large enterprises that need to manage multiple tenants across multiple clusters or infrastructure providers. Administrators can organize tenants and projects across multiple managed clusters, providing application teams access to a predetermined set of shared resources. Additional isolation and security enable administrators to separate tenants within a single domain to support MSPs who manage multiple clients. Users can also provision and administer Kubernetes clusters from a single control plane, whether the clusters are hosted in the data center, at the edge or in the cloud and manage them.
The new version also adds improved support for stateful container applications. According to the company, about half of their customers make heavy use of stateful applications like databases, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML). Diamanti Spektra 3.0 adds support for deploying and migrating stateful applications to other managed clusters. It also allows customers to configure replication policies for disaster recovery (DR) from a unified management console.
