Today, NVIDIA announced that they would be releasing an update to their GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) virtualization software next month. Nvidia also released some information about their recent collaborations with SUSE Linux. Nvidia was founded in 1993 and is one of only two major GPU manufacturers. Most recent news about the company has been focused on the company finally releasing their 7nm architecture, Ampere, GPUs.

Nvidia announced that their July software update would include cross-branch support, allowing the host video card driver to be on a different driver version than the version used by a guest virtual machine. This should make it easier for both IT teams and developers to use the company’s virtual GPUs (vGPU). IT teams will be happy that they can safely update to the latest version of the drivers as soon as they come out. This also helps smooth out driver deployment, allowing IT teams to smoothly roll out updates, instead of needing to do them all at once. Developers will be able to test with different driver versions without interfering with the workflows of other people using the same physical GPU card. Nvidia also claims that the July release will support managing their vGPUs with VMware’s latest version of VMware vRealize Operations.

In addition to their data center work, the July updates will also include improvements for streaming virtual reality and augmented reality, both used by many companies for training purposes. According to Nvidia, the upcoming release will add support for 120Hz VSync at resolutions up to 4K while streaming over 5G and Wi-Fi networks.

At the same time, Nvidia also announced that they have partnered with SUSE to providing vGPU support for their virtual machine platform on the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Nvidia will integrate their vComputeServer software with SUSE’s operating system to enable virtualization for AI and data science workloads.
