EMC Improves Open Source Community With RackHD, CoprHD 2.4, & REX-Ray 0.3

EMC has made several announcements pertaining to their open source community including the release of RackHD, which is a platform-agnostic technology stack designed to address managing and orchestrating server and network resources at hyper-scale. In addition, the company also announced new updates to Project REX-Ray, their open source storage orchestration engine used by containers from Docker, Mesos and others. Lastly, CoprHD Community has announced the release of CoprHD 2.4 and new collaborations with Intel and Oregon State University.

EMC’s RackHD software provides hardware management and orchestration (M&O) that automates discovery, description, provisioning and programming a wide array of servers today as well as a way to add upcoming networking devices. It can be leveraged as a component in a larger orchestration system or used to create a user interface for managing hardware services no matter what current hardware is in place. RackHD is also designed to aid organizations in accelerating the deployment of modern (Platform 3) applications that require an extensive number of commodity servers and heterogeneous infrastructure.

Originally released back in May of this year, the CoprHD Community have announced its first official update with version 2.4: new features, projects, community contributors and a new licensing switch to Apache License, Version 2.0. The new release also adds new support for EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) and EMC XtremIO 4.0. CoprHD is an open source software defined storage controller and API platform that allows for policy-based management and cloud automation of storage resources for block, object and file storage providers.

Additionally, Intel and Oregon State University have joined the CoprHD Community, the former which is heading a project to integrate Keystone with CoprHD. As a result, this will allow Cinder API and/or the CoprHD API to provide block storage services, giving organizations the ability to provide a single storage management interface with CoprHD for their OpenStack services.

The CoprHD Community has developed a southbound Software Development Kit (SDK), specifically designed to make it easier for storage vendors and other third parties to add support for other storage systems to CoprHD. Oregon State University students are developing the first plugin using the SouthBound SDK for a new EMC ScaleIO driver.

Updates (release 0.3) to EMC’s open source project REX-Ray storage orchestration engine have also been announced. Delivering persistent storage access for container runtimes including those provided by Docker and Mesos, REX-Ray is designed to enable advanced storage functionality across common storage, virtualization and cloud platforms.

The new release includes new updates through community contribution such as expanded storage platform support for GCE (Google Compute Engine), EMC Isilon, and EMC VMAX storage systems. REX-Ray has also been updated with a pre-emptive volume mount function, which allows the host to reassign mounted volumes from non-responsive hosts to help ensure that applications maintain access to persistent storage.

Availability

The RackHD project, CoprHD 2.4, and REX-Ray 0.3 are all available under the Apache License, Version 2.0.
