Ethernet Alliance Unveils 2015 Ethernet Roadmap

The Ethernet Alliance has released the 2015 Ethernet Roadmap. The Ethernet Roadmap outlines the current developments and future evolution of the Ethernet through the end of the decade. This is the first time ever the industry roadmap has been made public.

The Ethernet Alliance has released the 2015 Ethernet Roadmap. The Ethernet Roadmap outlines the current developments and future evolution of the Ethernet through the end of the decade. This is the first time ever the industry roadmap has been made public.

“The Ethernet Alliance is a global consortium that includes system and component vendors, industry experts, and university and government professionals who are committed to the continued success and expansion of Ethernet technology. The Ethernet Alliance takes Ethernet standards to market by supporting activities that span from incubation of new Ethernet technologies to interoperability demonstrations and education.”

Ethernet, which is the most widely adopted networking technology in the world, went through a period of rapid change and diversification last year. Currently there are four new speeds in development (2.5 Gigabit per second (Gb/s), 5Gb/s, 25Gb/s, and 400Gb/s). The industry is also considering two other Ethernet speeds, 50Gb/s and 200Gb/s. The Roadmap aims to bring clarity to the “mix of speeds, application spaces, and market drivers in the near-term.” And it also highlights the future speeds of Ethernet that may include: 800 Gb/s, 1 Terabyte per second (Tb/s), 1.6 Tb/s, 6.4 Tb/s, and 10 Tb/s.

Not only does the Roadmap look at speeds and potential speeds, it provides guidance to Ethernet development, and offers an in-depth look at the four key areas of its acceleration and expansion: consumer and residential; enterprise and campus; hyperscale data centers; and service providers. Not only does the Roadmap provide visibility into the underlying technologies, it highlights the four key areas’ rate progression

The 2015 Ethernet Roadmap is available through the links below and made its debut yesterday at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) at the Los Angeles Convention Center, in California. The Ethernet Alliance will be at booth 2531 at OFC through tomorrow.
