HPE has announced the launch of the latest version of its hyperconverged technology, HPE SimpliVity 5.0, marking a significant update that introduces a range of new features and improvements designed to enhance user experience and streamline IT operations.

At the core of version 5.0 are substantial under-the-hood enhancements to the HPE SimpliVity Virtual Appliance (SVA), which remains central to the platform’s promise of simplicity. The SVA has been upgraded to operate on Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), incorporating the Linux Kernel 6.2. This upgrade delivers performance and security boosts by leveraging the latest in open-source technology, including an update to Python 3.10, which introduces new optimization features for improved system performance.

A significant highlight of this release is the integration of HPE SimpliVity with the HPE Private Cloud Business Edition (PCBE), a move that significantly broadens the technology’s capabilities. Earlier this year, HPE unveiled GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition to offer enterprises customized and efficient experience to fit their infrastructure and capacity needs.

HPE PCBE design facilitates the management of workloads across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, offering a streamlined approach to IT operations. Previously available only for dHCI technologies, its compatibility with HPE SimpliVity allows users to manage deployments through a unified interface, promising a more efficient operational workflow. This integration provides a seamless management experience across different deployment scenarios (from edge computing setups to data center environments) while extending workload management capabilities to public clouds like AWS and Azure.

The update also includes support for the latest ESXi 8.0 U2 ISO version, alongside the vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) version 8.0 u2a, ensuring that HPE SimpliVity remains aligned with contemporary virtualization standards. HPE has emphasized that upgrading to ESXi 8.0 is not mandatory, as they will maintain support for ESXi and vCSA version 7.0. It is certainly nice to hear that they offer customers flexibility based on their specific requirements.

In addition, HPE has made significant strides in enhancing the user experience and operational efficiency, with features such as enabling and disabling the Intelligent Workload Optimizer (IWO) directly from the cluster view in vCenter. In conjunction with VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), HPE indicates that this feature will optimize platform performance and enforce data locality, promoting a balanced operational load across nodes.

Among changes in VMware’s licensing model transitioning to a subscription-based framework, HPE reassures existing VMware customers that their operations can continue unaffected for the duration of their (valid) contracts, including updates to HPE SimpliVity 5.0.

HPE SimpliVity introduces a suite of upgrades and improvements to simplify the upgrade process. These enhancements include pre-staging upgrade artifacts, unified use of iLO credentials, and direct access to the HPE SimpliVity Upgrade Planner. They are designed to reduce complexity, streamline upgrade planning, and expedite deployment times.
