IBM is a huge company, and they’ve made an appropriately large number of announcements regarding their plans for the fourth quarter of 2020. IBM announced that their 4Q 2020 release of IBM Spectrum Scale would add a fully containerized client. We previously covered IBM Spectrum Scale two years ago. The new release is also expected to add run-time operators to provide access to filesystems for HPC, AI, and scalable data lakes on any OpenShift (now owned by IBM) cluster. IBM also said that they would finally be adding support for the open-source s3fs file to object storage interface bundled with Red Hat OpenShift (now owned by IBM) to IBM Cloud Object Storage. The similarly named IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is also getting fourth-quarter updates. The company announced that the release would add the ability to deploy IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server as a container by using an (IBM-owned) Red Hat OpenShift operator. IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is also expected to beta support for Microsoft Azure Marketplace. IBM’s FlashSystem is also expected to get an update. The 4Q 2020 release for IBM FlashSystem will include updated Ansible scripts, enhanced support for storage-class memory, and what the company describes as improvements in snapshot and data efficiency.
On the hardware side, IBM announced new Gen7 b-type SAN switches and directors. Both are expected to be available in 4Q 2020. The company says the new switches and directors will come with new IBM SANnav management software.
The furthest looking announcement IBM made today was a projection for 2021. Early next year, they plan to unveil products based on LTO 9 tape technology with a focus on data security.
