IDC Releases 1Q18 Converged Systems Tracker; Dell EMC/VMware Remain At Top

The International Data Corporation (IDC) ran its quarterly Converged Systems Tracker this quarter and saw that worldwide converged systems market revenue increased 19.6% year on year to $3.2 billion for the first quarter of 2018. This shows a slightly faster uptick in HCI over the last quarter’s 9.1% jump. Dell EMC continues its lead slightly pulling away from the other competitors and VMware pulls even farther away from Nutanix to keep its lead.

The IDC Converged Systems Tracker looks at three different segments: certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure, integrated platforms, and hyperconverged systems. The certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure market generated $1.3 billion in this quarter or a year-on-year decline of 0.9%. Revenue from hyperconverged systems grew 76.3% year on year at $1.2 billion for the quarter. A bit of a jump over last quarter as HCI is still gaining momentum.

IDC reports total numbers but they also look at the top vendors in certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure and hyperconverged systems. As we reported last quarter Dell EMC is still at the top as far as supplying systems and VMware is still at the top with software. Both companies are actually increasing their lead pulling farther away from their competitors. For reference systems & integrated infrastructure Dell EMC makes up 48% of the market with $641.3 million in Revenue. For hyperconverged systems it is a bit harder to look at numbers as Dell sells HCI systems to Nutanix, but Dell holds the lead at 29.6% market share and $363 million, a big jump from the same quarter a year ago. And on a software side, VMware is in the top spot with 37.2% of the market share or $456.3 million in revenue for the quarter.

While it is interesting to note that Dell EMC and VMware are at the top, Nutanix is also climbing in market share. On the software side of things it is coming down to two goliaths as they are expanding and the rest of the vendors shrink.
