The Linux Foundation announced its new effort to define and promote open source software and standards for cloud object storage technologies, the Kinetic Open Storage Project. This project brings together several industry leaders including Cisco, Cleversafe, Dell, Digital Sense, Huawei, NetApp, Open vStorage, Red Hat, Scality, Seagate, SwiftStack, Toshiba and Western Digital.

The Kinetic Open Storage Project will be seen as a foundational technology for providing open source object storage on next generation, Ethernet-enabled storage devices, such as Seagate’s Kinetic HDD. The new project will help companies speed storage technology evolution with open source software and standards, giving them the ability to tackle the complexities that are being introduce by the convergence of new technologies such as cloud, virtualization, and containers.

Ethernet-enabled storage devices allow the storage to be accessed directly eliminating the need for the drives to be managed by a storage server. This direct access will give the devices a boost in performance while allowing customers to lower their total cost of ownership. Seagate stated that their Kinetic HDD was designed with the idea of supporting the open source community in order to speed its adoption. The Linux Foundation will manage the open source libraries, APIs and simulators interfacing with Kinetic-based drives.
