iXsystems TrueNAS SCALE revealed

In March, iXsystems announced that starting from the upcoming version 12.0, FreeNAS and TrueNAS packages will be unified into a single image under the name of TrueNAS. This week iXsystems has confirmed a new project called TrueNAS SCALE. With this new Open Source initiative, the company proposes to take some steps forward in software-defined infrastructure capabilities.

In March, iXsystems announced that starting from the upcoming version 12.0, FreeNAS and TrueNAS packages will be unified into a single image under the name of TrueNAS. This week iXsystems has confirmed a new project called TrueNAS SCALE. With this new Open Source initiative, the company proposes to take some steps forward in software-defined infrastructure capabilities.

FreeNAS is considered the world’s number-one open source storage software. TrueNAS is the enterprise version of FreeNAS for organizations of all sizes that need additional uptime and performance, as well as the enterprise-grade support necessary for critical data and applications.  With the new unification, FreeNAS and TrueNAS will be available as the same software image from a single download. FreeNAS will take on the name of TrueNAS CORE. TrueNAS, on the other hand, will be identified as TrueNAS Enterprise, automatically inheriting all TrueNAS CORE features. TrueNAS Enterprise provides the additional fault-tolerance, performance, and support that businesses and critical applications require.

Now, the company reveals SCALE, a new addition to the TrueNAS software family. SCALE uses much of the same TrueNAS 12.0 source code but adds a few different twists, said the company through its forum. iXsystems also informs that the source code for the TrueNAS SCALE is already available on GitHub and under very active development. Over the next quarter, the company plans to provide more detailed information about the architecture, download links to the installation images, and more details on how to get involved for collaboration.

The company adds that the SCALE project doesn’t change the plans for the continued support and development of TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise on FreeBSD. Besides, the full suite of software will be very complementary to each other.

Availability

While TrueNAS CORE 12.0 is planned for release in the latter half of the year, Q3 2020, SCALE, will be a development project for the remainder of 2020 with a scheduled release in 2021.
