Today during Ceph Day in Berlin, the Linux Foundation announced the launch of the Ceph Foundation. This new foundation will help support the Ceph open source project community. The project aims to develop a unified distributed storage system providing applications with object, block, and file system interfaces. The new Ceph Foundation is the successor framework to the Ceph Advisory Board, announced a few years back.

As we previously stated, Ceph is a software-defined storage system that runs on commodity hardware. Ceph is massively scalable by design. The design makes it enable and support enterprises' digital transformation efforts through web scale object and cloud infrastructures. The latest version of Red Hat Ceph Storage brings new and enhanced capabilities for enterprise object storage customers who are demanding scale, increased security, and strong compatibility with industry-standard APIs. Ceph is widely used around the world by both cloud providers and large enterprises including financial institutions (Bloomberg, Fidelity), cloud service providers (Rackspace, Linode), academic and government institutions (Massachusetts Open Cloud), telecommunications infrastructure providers (Deutsche Telekom), auto manufacturers (BMW), software solution providers (SAP, Salesforce), and many more.

The Ceph Foundation is composed of 30 members from global technology leaders including Premier members such as Amihan Global, Canonical, China Mobile, DigitalOcean, Intel, ProphetStor Data Services, OVH Hosting, Red Hat, SoftIron, SUSE, Western Digital, XSKY Data Technology, and ZTE. According to the foundation, it will organize and distribute financial contributions in a coordinated, vendor-neutral fashion for immediate community benefit. Those involved hope to accelerate adoption of Ceph, as well as increase training and in-person collaboration across the Ceph ecosystem.

The new and emerging technologies (cloud, AI, ML, and containers) are making Ceph more appealing. Ceph can be combined with analytics and machine learning making it able to quickly comb through massive amounts of unstructured data. Through this, Ceph can lean patterns of customer behavior and conversations, and find potential noncompliance scenarios. This can lead to more efficient business and potentially new revenue streams.
