Mellanox Announces Driver Support For ConnectX-4 & RoCE For vSphere

Today at VMworld 2016 in Las Vegas, Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. announced that it now has software driver support for ConnectX-4 Ethernet and RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) on VMware vSphere. According to Mellanox, this will be the first time that virtualized enterprise applications will be able to realize the same industry-leading performance and efficiency as non-virtualized environments. This new software delivers new capabilities including increased Ethernet network speeds at 25/50 and 100 Gb/s, virtualized application communication over RoCE, and advanced network virtualization and SDN (Software Defined Networking) acceleration support.

The new vSphere release uses the ConnectX-4 offload engines to accelerate VXLAN virtual networks and VXLAN tunnel endpoint gateways. On that, benchmarks have been ran showing VDI over 25Gb/s are over two times as efficient as running them over 10Gb/s. Along with this, Mellanox also points out that RoCE improves storage access times by up to ten times, while using 50% less CPU resources compared to traditional transport. Mellanox’s ConnectX-4 supports VMware vSphere clouds with Ethernet networks operating at speeds up to 100Gb/s. Mellanox states that both compute and storage traffic can be ran over a single wire, improving both the ROI of HCI and enabling multicore CPUs to achieve their full capacity to run applications.

Mellanox will be at booth number 2223 at VMworld 2016. They will be demonstrating the benefits of using CloudX Enterprise and CloudX Telecom with VMware vSphere, VMware Virtual SAN, and VMware NSX, connected by Mellanox’s 10/25/40/50/100 Gb/s Ethernet and RoCE end-to-end solution.
