Today Micron Technology announced that it is shipping its new Micron 1α DRAM products in volume. 1α, or 1-alpha, is said to be the most advanced DRAM process technology and offering major improvements in bit density, power, and performance. This new DRAM will be shipped out across Micron’s portfolio from data centers, mobile devices, to smart vehicles.
The last DRAM innovation we looked at from Micron was their 1z technology in 2019. Unsurprisingly, the company is saying that the new Micron 1α DRAM technology is better in several ways than the 1z. First, Micron says the 1α has 40% more density than the 1z. The 1α are also more power-efficient, by up to 15%. While this is beneficial across the board, it is more so in small mobile devices, where 5G users love to run lots of apps that drain battery life.
Aside from the above improvements, Micron is pretty tight-lipped about what else the 1α DRAM offers. The only other bit they shared is that the technology will be available in densities from 8Gb to 16Gb. It will be interesting to see how the company integrates the technology into the rest of their line, including Crucial, and how that affects performance.
The Micron 1α DRAM is shipping now starting with DDR4 memory for compute customers and Crucial consumer PC DRAM products. The company intends to introduce new products based on the technology throughout the year.
