This week DataCore Software announced that it has acquired Caringo, Inc. This acquisition adds object storage to DataCore’s software-defined portfolio. According to DataCore, they will be a single vendor that can offer complete, best-of-breed software-defined storage solutions for block, file, and object. The acquisition also added talent and customers from Caringo.

Headquartered in Austin, TX, Caringo was founded in 2005 with its primary focus on object storage and creating software to deal with the relentless data growth. Swarm was Caringo’s main product and according to the company, provided a foundation for hyperscale data storage, access, and analysis at petabyte scale, while guaranteeing data integrity and eliminating hardware dependencies. In its 15 years, Caringo was able to nab a few big customers including BT Television, Department of Defense, Disney Streaming Services, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Argonne National Labs.

As we reported a couple of years ago, DataCore ONE was launched to accelerate software-defined storage (SDS), they released an HCI appliance along with it reviewed here. The company stated that ONE aimed to accelerate the adoption of software-defined storage (SDS) in enterprise data centers, the cloud and edge computing; centralizing command and control of different classes of storage spanning primary, secondary, and archive. The acquisition of Caringo should further this vision.

Acquiring Caringo makes sense as it compliments DataCore’s portfolio including vFilO software, a next-generation distributed file and object storage virtualization technology uniquely designed to help enterprises organize, optimize, and control large volumes of data scattered on-premises and in the cloud, as well as the benefits of hardware independence, flexibility, availability, performance, and efficiency/cost savings provided by DataCore SANsymphony software for block-based storage. The acquisition also expanded DataCore’s presence in Austin adding sales, marketing, and R&D staff along with a lab and room for expansion.

The acquisition comes after a strong year for DataCore in 2020. The company added over 100 new customers per quarter, saw double-digit YoY growth. The expansion of the portfolio, team, and resources is setting them up for another good year in 2021.
