Samsung Electronics Co. announced today the release of its new portable SSD, the T1. The T1 is a secure and durable portable SSD that is all about speed without a huge cost premium. The T1 has a capacity up to 1TB and comes in a sleek design that is both stylish and easy to take on the go as it only weighs slightly over an ounce and is smaller than a business card.

Samsung is the first big storage vendor to offer a high end portable SSD that is aimed at such a wide audience. Prior portable SSDs have generally carried a very high price premium and have largely targeted media professionals. Samsung takes a different approach with the T1, which is powered by Samsung's 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology, the same technology that powers its 850 EVO SSD. Inside the T1 is what amounts to a modified 850 EVO, which helps drive both the performance side of the equation and reasonable economics. The T1 MSRP is roughly $35 higher than the bare drive (250GB), but prices are expected to fall once the T1 spend some time in the market.

With a USB 3.0 the drive can achieve read/write speeds up to 450MB/s and random read performance of 8,000 IOPS and random write performance of 21,000 IOPS. To put it in a different perspective, it only take 8 seconds to transfer a 3GB movie file and 27 seconds to transfer a 10GB movie file.

Since the SSD is something that is with the user when they are on the go, the T1 is also durable. Being an SSD, it has no moving parts to worry about failing or wearing out. It can withstand normal bumps and drops. It is shock resistant up to 1500G/0.5ms. The T1 features a Dynamic Thermal Guard that activates in extreme temperature conditions protecting the drive and its data. And the drive using AES 256-bit and is password protected to keep data from unwanted access.
