Sanbolic Releases Melio5.5 and Announces New Software-Defined Data Acceleration Patents

Sanbolic today announced the availability of Melio5.5, its infrastructure-agnostic data acceleration platform, which incorporates new features to optimize commodity servers and legacy flash, SDD, and HDD storage to better support scale-out implementations. The update includes new support for Write Once Read Many (WORM) devices in cross-datacenter, geo-distributed applications along with enhancements to QoS, dynamic volume expansion, node and storage scale-out, and online split-able RAID 1/10 mirroring for live migration and cloning.

The Melio5.5 software-defined data acceleration platform utilizes a massively scalable distributed clustered file system to coordinate data and storage management across legacy storage and flash devices at the host layer, and provides intelligent data placement technology that auto-detects flash and SSD storage to allow for static and per-file, rule-based tiering of user data. Melio’s new WORM support means that information, once written, cannot be deleted or modified, often a requirement for applications in environments like financial institutions to utilize flash storage via the platform.

Quality of Service enhancements allow automatically applied, cluster-wide ratios for I/O that are applied to shared storage hardware based on rules over file path and process name, which allows administrators to specify SLAs across machines, workloads, and applications. Melio5.5 also adds the ability to create writable snapshots in order to run analytics and non-clustered applications over the same datasets.

Sanbolic also announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted two new patents pertaining to the Melio5.5. The first patent addresses a system to improve access to files in a shared storage system via a single dedicated server device. Because Melio coordinates clusters using non-uniform x86 servers, the new patent improves platform performance because any server can access shared data the moment the hardware allows for it. The second patent protects Sanbolic technology for scale-out to up to 2,048 nodes and 65,000 storage devices per server cluster by using a fully symmetrical distributed lock manager technology. All machines in a cluster are lock servers, ensuring that no single server is a bottleneck.

Availability

Melio5.5 is available now as a free evaluation copy from Sanbolic, with pricing available upon request.
