SMART is announcing ULLtraDIMM, the first enterprise-class ultra-low latency (ULL) SSD, which by connecting to the memory channel by way of its DIMM form factor is cost-effective and yet still delivers DRAM-like performance. The latency figures achieved via this technology optimize the ULLtraDIMM for applications that include high frequency trading, cloud computing, virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and Big Data analytics. While some organizations and their workloads require the super high IOPS figures, many others have the need for extremely consistent, low-latency. The ULLtraDIMM delivers on both of those requirements, with quoted figures below.
The ULLtraDIMM SSD connects flash directly to the CPU through the memory channel by leveraging a technology to which they have exclusive access, Diablo Technologies’ Memory Channel Storage (MCS) architecture. We covered Diablo’s MCS technology recently, and with the SMART ULLtraDIMM SSD, organizations can leverage existing memory slots. The ULLtraDIMM SSD hits latency marks at <5µs while delivering throughput at up to 150K/60K IOPS (read/write) and 1GB/s and 760MB/s sustained performance (read/write) per DIMM slot. Of course, installing additional devices scales linearly without hitting latency.
The ULLtraDIMM SSD will ship in 200GB and 400GB capacities and leverages SMART’s Guardian Technology Platform which boosts endurance. With it, the ULLtraDIMM SSD is quoted at up to 10 drive writes per day (DWPD) over the five year warranty period. The ULLtraDIMM comes equipped with a full line of enterprise features, including SMART Storage Systems’ third generation backup power circuit technology, full data path protection and data fail recovery.
