Supermicro Adds 60- & 90-Bay 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Storage

Today Super Micro Computer, Inc. announced new top-loading storage solutions that leverage the 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Supermicro is rolling out 60-bay and 90-bay solutions that leverage the company’s new Simply Double storage systems. The support of the new processors means that these new storage solutions can support PCIe Gen4 drives for maximum performance.

Today Super Micro Computer, Inc. announced new top-loading storage solutions that leverage the 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Supermicro is rolling out 60-bay and 90-bay solutions that leverage the company’s new Simply Double storage systems. The support of the new processors means that these new storage solutions can support PCIe Gen4 drives for maximum performance.

 

While Supermicro is no stranger to ultra-high-capacity top-loading storage solutions, this may be their first with the support of PCIe Gen4. Today’s announcement, coupled with the company’s Simply Double storage, brings the same form factor and storage with the performance of the new 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs (the dual-node system supports dual-sockets) and 16 DIMMs per node. The new chassis is said to enhance airflow and still be easy to service, even aspects such as the motherboard and internal drives.

There are two new, 4U systems, one 60-bay, and one 90-bay both are available in single-node, dual-node, and dual-node high availability (HA) configurations. The company states that the dual-node HA and single-node configurations control access to all drives in the systems. The dual-node configuration evenly split the drive control access between each node. Each system features hot-swap bays either 2.5″ or 3.5″ SAS/SATA bays with onboard M.2 slots and two internal slim SATA SSD slots. The single-node system is said to support two rear hot-swap 2.5″ bays for OS mirroring and four optional NVMe U.2 bays for fast caching. In total, the system can support 1.6PB of HDD storage and up to 60TB of flash storage (through the rear NVMe storage).

Both systems are being showcased at the Open Supermicro Storage Summit from July 27-29, 2021.
