Synology has released the DS1812+, their first eight-bay DiskStation. The freestanding NAS supports up to 32TB of storage natively with 4TB hard drives, along with up to another 40TB using two five-bay DX510 expansion units. While designed for the SMB user the DS1812+ still provides great support for products like VMware, Citrix Xen and Microsoft’s Hyper-V while offering tremendous ease of use and flexibility with Synology’s DiskStation Manager 3.2 software.
The DS1812+ uses a dual-core 2.13GHz processor with 1GB of memory, expandable to 3GB. The net result is Synology’s fastest SMB NAS to date, with read speeds of up to 202 MB/s and writes of 194 MB/s utilizing two 1GbE ports with link aggregation enabled.
Synology also includes plenty of access, with two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, two eSATA ports and twin Gigabit Ethernet ports. Synology also provides hot swap support and key locks so drives aren’t accidentally removed during operation.
