Toshiba has announced the addition of 6TB SATA and SAS models to its MG04 series of 3.5-inch form factor enterprise HDDs, which are specifically designed for midline and nearline business critical workloads. The new SAS interface models offer 12Gbit/s SAS transfer rate as well as enhanced power management features for easy integration into the latest generation of datacenter infrastructure.

The new MG04 6TB models provide a 50% increase in capacity compared to the generation of 4TB models and a 30% increase in sustained data rate. The new enterprise HDDs also support both industry-standard 4K native and 512e Advanced Format sector technologies for ideal performance in the latest generation servers and storage systems. In addition, Emulated 512e Advanced Format sector technology performs best in legacy applications that require 512 sector lengths using aligned-write environments.

Both 6TB MG04ACA and MG04SCA 12Gbit/s models are equipped with Toshiba’s persistent write cache technologies, which are designed to help protect against data loss during sudden power loss as well as to help improve performance and data reliability. Model options supporting SAS and SATA commands to enable sanitize “instant” cryptographic erase (SIE) are also available.

The MG04ACA and MG04SCA spin at 7,200 RPM, offering nearline-class seek performance for improved application response times. Addition, the higher capacity (6TB) per spindle saves rack space and reduces the footprint and operational burden of business-critical servers and storage systems. As a result, this helps to optimize total cost of ownership in high-density scale-out environments. The 6TB models also boast 50 percent better power efficiency (watts per terabyte) compared to the previous generation.

Availability

The 6TB MG04ACA SATA and MG04SCA 12Gbit/s SAS models are slated to begin OEM customers sampling sometime in Q1 2015.
