Toshiba Announces New Lineup of Data Center SSDs with BiCS FLASH 64-Layer 3D Flash Memory

Toshiba has added three new 3D flash memory-based families of PCI Express NVMe and SATA SSDs to their storage portfolio, the CD5, XD5 and HK6-DC. Available in multiple form factors, these SSDs are built to give infrastructure managers the performance they need to excel under demanding data center workload profiles with their robust performance, reliability and excellent IO consistency. Moreover, it offers lower operating power for read-intensive applications including NoSQL databases, big data analytics and streaming media.


Toshiba has added three new 3D flash memory-based families of PCI Express NVMe and SATA SSDs to their storage portfolio, the CD5, XD5 and HK6-DC. Available in multiple form factors, these SSDs are built to give infrastructure managers the performance they need to excel under demanding data center workload profiles with their robust performance, reliability and excellent IO consistency. Moreover, it offers lower operating power for read-intensive applications including NoSQL databases, big data analytics and streaming media.

The new SSDs use the company’s next-gen BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory, which is based on the Toshiba’s 64-layer architecture and 3-bit-per-cell technology (first demonstrated in May of last year) and are built with end-to-end vertical integration for further quality and reliability:

  • The CD5 Series is available in capacities ranging from 960GB to 7.68TB in a U.2 form factor. Performance is quoted at 500,000 and 35,000 IOPS in random reads and write writes, respectively, and up to 3,140 and 1,980MB/s in sequential reads and writes, respectively, within a 9-14W power envelope.
  • The XD5 Series uses an M.2 22110 form factor and comes in capacities of up to 3.84TB. It is quoted to deliver performance up to 2,600 and 890MB/s in sequential reads and writes, respectively, in a 7W power envelope. They are designed to boast low latency and performance consistency in read-intensive workloads and are targeted specifically at Open Compute Platform (OCP) and hyper-scale/cloud applications.
  • The HK6-DC Series is a 6Gbit/s SATA SSD and available in capacities of 960GB, 1.92TB and 3.84TB. It is touted as a read-intensive, latency-optimized SSD that can deliver up to 85,000 random read IOPS as well as up to 550MB/s in sequential read performance.

All three new lines feature power loss protection and support cryptographic erase support, giving users an easy method to securely remove data. In addition, the new data center SSDs leverage AES 256-bit data to encrypt data securely without the performance impact associated with software-based solutions.

Availability

Backed by a 5-year warranty, Toshiba is slated to begin shipping samples of the CD5, XD5 and HK6-DC SSD families to select customers in sometime in Q2 2018.
