Today, VMware announced the general availability of VMware Cloud. VMware Cloud is what the company calls their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offerings. Their Infrastructure-as-a-Service provides Dell VxRail HCI running VMware software like VMware vSphere, VMware vSAN, and VMware NSX. VMware is the biggest name in virtualization and has been for so long that you may not remember that the company started in 1998.

Probably the most important new feature is the addition of a 42RU R2 rack to the Infrastructure-as-a-Service’s lineup. It is undoubtedly the largest feature measuring just the sheer mass. Previously, customers were limited to only R1 racks. The new 42RU R2 rack is available for both data center and colocation deployment. In a similarly large-scale vein, VMware also gives customers the option to purchase automatic capacity expansion. According to VMware, the company will automatically add new nodes as needed to ease scalability concerns for customers willing to pay for the new service.
While VMware Cloud primarily runs VMware software on Dell VxRail, it doesn’t just use VMware software. The Infrastructure-as-a-Service also provides backup and recovery with certification of Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager and PowerProtect Cyber Recovery solutions. The service also recently completed certification with Veeam, so customers now have the option of using Veeam for backup and recovery as well.
