WD Gold, WD Red Pro and WD Purple Pro 22TB CMR HDDs Now Shipping

Western Digital has announced that it is now shipping new 22TB HDDs as part of the WD Gold, WD Red Pro and WD Purple Pro families of CMR (conventional magnetic recording) enterprise drives.

Western Digital has announced that it is now shipping new 22TB HDDs as part of the WD Gold, WD Red Pro and WD Purple Pro families of CMR (conventional magnetic recording) enterprise drives.

Initially announced back in May, the WD Gold HDDs are designed for IT/data center channel customers, WD Red Pro is meant for NAS users and WD Purple Pro is ideal for smart video/surveillance environments. All new models feature OptiNAND technology, energy-assisted PMR (ePMR), triple-stage actuator (TSA) and HelioSeal. This makes them the industry’s highest areal density at 2.2TB per platter.

WD Gold HDDs: Data Center Storage Systems

The 22TB WD Gold CMR HDD (with OptiNAND technology) allows users to lower TCO, as you will be able to have the same physical footprint but at a larger capacity. It will also help reduce required rack space and reduce network, power, cooling, and cabling costs.

WD’s unique OptiNAND-enabled ArmorCache technology combines the performance of write cache enabled mode with the data protection of write cache disabled mode without having to compromise by choosing between the two. Specifically, when operating in WCE mode, drives can ensure that the DRAM cache is safely written (no data is lost) when an unexpected loss of power occurs. WCD mode means a larger cache size guarantees more data will be safely written upon power loss, and the drive operates with WCE-equivalent performance.

22TB WD Gold CMR HDD range from 1TB-22TB, which makes them ideal for demanding storage environments. They provide up to 2.5M hours MTBF, vibration protection technology and a low power draw due to HelioSeal technology (12TB models and above).

WD Red Pro HDDs: For NAS Systems up to 24 Bays

The new 22TB WD Red Pro CMR HDDs (also with OptiNAND technology) are designed for those who have reached the maximum capacity on their NAS system(s) and need to expand. Like all WD Red Pro models, the new ultra-high capacity is purpose-built for NAS systems that house up to 24 bays and optimized for multi-user applications and high-intensity workloads in 24×7 environments.

The WD Red Pro line of NAS HDDs is great for storing, protecting, archiving, and sharing massive amounts of data with numerous users. They can handle various data-hungry use cases at once, including file sync and sharing, backup/archive, multimedia repository, and private cloud storage. The WD Red Pro family is available in capacities ranging from 2TB to 22TB.

WD Purple Pro HDDs: For Smart Video Recorders, Appliances and Servers

The 22TB WD Purple Pro CMR HDD (with OptiNAND technology) is an enterprise-class drive designed to excel in video analytics servers and AI and deep-learning system environments. The new drive comes with Western Digital’s proprietary AllFrame AI technology, which supports 32 AI streams for deep-learning analytics within the system while reducing dropped frames at the same time.

In addition, the WD Purple Pro line is optimized to handle up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and many of the latest available smart cameras that transmit multiple streams. It also offers high reliability with a 2.5 million hours MTBF rating, making it ideal for advanced smart-video solutions that operate in 24/7 environments. The WD Purple Pro HDD family is available in capacities ranging from 8TB-22TB.
