WD has announced the immediate availability of new WD RE SAS and WD RE SATA hard drives in capacities up to 4TB. The new RE drives are available in 1TB, 2TB, 3TB and 4TB capacities for nearline SAS and 2TB, 3TB and 4TB for SATA. The new drives use a 5-platter, 800GB per-platter design.

The march towards 4TB drives is one of the most important recent developments for the 3.5-inch form factor, which has seen renewed interest and research coinciding with the rise of cloud storage and other models for storing massive amounts of data. Using 10 4U enclosures with 60 drives per enclosure, 4TB hard drives now allow storage administrators to achieve up to 2.4PB of raw capacity in a single rack.

The new WD RE drives are dual port, with full duplex connectivity and are specified at 1.4M hours MTBF for WD RE SAS drives and 1.2M hours MTBF for WD RE SATA drives. WD’s NoTouch ramp load technology reduces wear and improves durability during transportation by never requiring that the recording heads touch the disk media. The WD RE drives also feature WD’s Dual Stage Actuation (DSA) and Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) to improve operation in in vibration-prone applications, such as in multi-drive chassis.
