WD has announced a 6TB version of its WD Purple line of 3.5-inch hard drives for video surveillance applications. The WD Purple hard drives are designed for new and existing home and small business security system environments with up to eight hard drives and up to 32 high-definition video cameras. WD’s surveillance hard drives are offered in capacities from 1 TB up to 6 TB.

WD Purple hard drives come equipped with WD technologies, including:

  • AllFrame – When combined with ATA streaming support, AllFrame reduces video frame loss, improves playback and increases the number of drive bays supported. WD Purple includes exclusive firmware enhancements that enable improved playback and minimize interruptions within a surveillance system.
  • IntelliSeek Technology – With low power consumption playing a crucial role in high-temperature always-on surveillance environments, IntelliSeek technology calculates the optimum seek speeds for the system workload, enabling lower power consumption and reducing noise and vibration.

WD's Purple hard drive line offer low power consumption as well as many advanced performance features that are normally only reserved for enterprise-level storage. They also are built to withstand the demands of always-on digital PVR, DVR and NVR recording environments and include firmware upgrades that protect against video pixilation and interruptions within a surveillance system. In addition, the hard drives are tested with surveillance-class standards as well as compatibility with industry-leading chassis and chip-sets.

Price and Availability

WD Purple surveillance-class hard drives are now shipping through select distributors and resellers, and are available in 1TB to 6TB capacities. Pricing for the 3.5-inch 6 TB drive (WD60PURX) is $329.99.  Pricing for other capacities include: 1TB drive (WD10PURX) at $89.99; 2TB drive (WD20PURX) at $119.99; 3TB drive (WD30PURX) at $159.99 and the 4 TB drive (WD40PURX) at $199.99 USD. Consumers can also use the Compatibility Selector to help with their WD surveillance drive selection.
