Western Digital has announced the new WD Red SN700 NVMe SSD, a high-endurance, caching drive that helps to accelerate NAS performance for its SMB customers. WD has purpose-built the SN700 to support 24/7 NAS environments and always-on applications, focusing on reliability and endurance with a 1,750,000 hour MTBF rating.
The WD Red SN700 is also highlighted by its fast system responsiveness and I/O performance, which is ideal for multi-user, multi-application use cases. WD claims that this will allow SMBs to effectively tackle projects such as virtualization, collaborative editing, and intensive database storage. We’ve seen it time and again in the lab, these caching drives do a great job of accelerating high-capacity hard drives with just a little flash.
Systems from QNAP, Synology, and others that have NVMe acceleration bays, will gladly take advantage of these new drives. As seen above, many Synology models have easy-to-access cache drive bays on the bottom of the NAS.
