Red Hat, Inc. enhances support for hybrid and multi-cloud by including Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation as part of OpenShift Platform Plus. This new bundle builds out the full-featured, complete hybrid cloud platform addressing cloud-native computing requirements. Announced today, the latest offering brings data services to the enterprise Kubernetes platform in a single solution, including software-defined storage.

Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus is a complete, multi-cloud Kubernetes stack out of the box, addressing the needs of DevSecOps and application developers. Adding Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation gives those developers a consistent data platform with persistent storage that can span clouds and infrastructure.

Running as a Kubernetes service, the defacto standard in container orchestration, OpenShift Data Foundation is engineered, tested, and qualified to provide data services for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on any infrastructure. OpenShift Data Foundation can also be decoupled and managed as a separate, independently scalable data store, delivering data for one or many Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform clusters.

Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation

Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus brings together the necessary capabilities that provide a consistent way to secure, protect and manage applications throughout the software lifecycle across Kubernetes clusters, including across different cloud infrastructures.

Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus includes:

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, a hybrid cloud foundation built on Kubernetes.
  • Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for Kubernetes to secure software supply chains, infrastructure, and workloads.
  • Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes, end-to-end visibility, management, and control of Kubernetes clusters across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
  • Red Hat Quay, provides a global and scalable container registry providing a build pipeline that spans infrastructures with images analyzed for security vulnerabilities, identifying potential issues that can help mitigate security risks.
  • Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation Essentials, provides built-in cluster data management for containerized workloads uniformly across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus offers organizations a single solution with tools and functionality to accelerate cloud-native initiatives and adopt DevSecOps across the entirety of the hybrid cloud, including at the edge.

Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation provides container-native storage.

Data services for containers and the hybrid cloud

Cloud-native applications require cluster data management services that deliver a consistent experience for workloads in hybrid and multi-cloud environments and can scale dynamically as demands change. Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation integrated with Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus provides organizations with built-in access to common data services that work across the container landscape, helping to eliminate storage silos. Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation recent release 4.9 includes new features that help organizations quickly and efficiently develop and deploy applications, including:

  • Multicloud object gateway namespace buckets resolve data availability challenges by offering a more flexible way to address data needs across different cloud locations. Data can reside in a single location while also being made available on alternative locations where applications need access, eliminating the need to copy data over to the alternative location.
  • Persistent volume encryption enables users to manage and hold encryption keys separate from their cluster.

According to Joe Fernandes, vice president, and general manager, Cloud Platforms, Red Hat:

“As organizations diversify their applications to meet the evolving needs of the global economy, the need to quickly innovate at scale while still maintaining a strong IT security posture is paramount. Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus provides the innovation of Kubernetes tailored for enterprise needs, along with a broad set of additional capabilities like management, enhanced security features, and now storage out of the box, answering common production requirements that basic Kubernetes services cannot address.”

Availability

Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus is available now. Red Hat customers who have an active Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus subscription receive OpenShift Data Foundation Essentials as part of their existing subscription at no extra cost.

Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus with Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation Advanced bundle is available now, adding advanced security features, multi-cluster workload support, disaster recovery, and standalone and mixed-use storage support to the capabilities in OpenShift Data Foundation Essentials.

Pegadaian director of information technology and digital, Teguh Wahyono, explained:

“With Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation, we have been able to modernize our applications, speed up innovation, and deploy new services faster and more reliably. Our developers are able to improve the delivery speed, and relevance of IT services to the business and roll out relevant solutions for customers. Additionally, working with Red Hat, we have been able to create an open-source culture, encouraging our developers and business units to promote innovation.”
