Amazon.com had previously announced that they were enhancing their Elastic Block Storage (EBS) with SSDs last year. Amazon just announced that in addition to the SSD enhancements, users can now choose between a Provisioned IOPS SSD volumes with 16TB of capacity, can process up to 20,000 IOPS, and has a maximum throughput of 320MB/s and General Purpose SSD volumes with 16TB of capacity, can process up to 10,000 IOPS, and has a maximum throughput of 160MB/s.
Amazon is offering two different volumes for customers. The Provisioned IOPS SSD volume is for customers that need either I/O intensive workloads such as NoSQL databases. And the General purpose volume for a broad range of “bursty” workloads for small to medium databases, dev and test environments, and boot volumes. The general purpose volumes are designed to deliver a consistent baseline performance of 3 IOPS/GB. Both volumes have 16TB of capacity, single-digit millisecond latencies, and 99.999% availability.
The increase in capacity and performance is part of Amazon promise to help customers focus on their core business. Customers no longer have to stripe together multiple small volumes to run applications requiring large amounts of storage or high performance. The increase in capacity should simplify management of resources, and make backups easier without the need of coordinated snapshots across several striped volumes.
Availability and pricing
The larger and faster EBS volumes are available now in all AWS regions. The general purpose volume costs $0.10 per GB/month of provisioned storage and the Provisioned IOPS volume costs $0.125 per GB/month of provisioned storage and $0.065 per provisioned IOPS/month.
