Amazon has announced two new features to its Amazon FSx for Windows File Server service: storage size scaling and throughput capacity scaling. The service is deeply integrated with the AWS ecosystem, and it is built on Windows Server, delivering a wide range of administrative features. It provides fully managed, native, highly reliable, and scaling file storage accessible over the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol.

For Amazon, fully managing means managing both the hardware and software, so customers no longer need to plan capacity, set up storage, install software, administer licenses and updates, and more. You don’t need to worry about these management operations. With the new additions, Amazon states there is also no need to worry about growing data sets when creating the file system. Now, the storage capacity scaling allows you to increase your file system size as your data set increases, and throughput capacity is bidirectional. This lets us adjust throughput up or down dynamically to help fine-tune performance and reduce costs.

From the AWS management console, when we are when creating a file system, it is possible to specify Storage Capacity and Throughput Capacity. As Amazon reports, the storage capacity of SSD can be defined between 32 GiB and 65,536 GiB, and the capacity of HDD can be defined between 2,000 GiB and 65,536 GiB. And about throughput capacity, every Amazon FSx file system has a throughput capacity that customers can configure when the file system is created. The throughput capacity determines the speed at which the file server hosting your file system can serve file data to clients accessing it.

With this release, there are two options to smoothly scale-up storage capacity and can scale-up or scale-down throughput capacity on the file system. One option is to use the AWS Management Console and “scale” with a quick click of a button. Another option is to use the AWS Software Development Kit (SDK) or Command Line Interface (CLI) tools.

Amazon FSx file storage is accessible from Windows, Linux, and MacOS compute instances and devices running on AWS or on-premises.
