Today Synology Inc. launched two new RackStation units powered by AMD processors, the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+. Both of the new devices are 8-bay NAS, that as the name implies, are rack-mounted. The units are 2U and aimed at the small-business sector.
For those unfamiliar with Synology, the RP at the end of one unit means that it is equipped with dual power supplies. Both the Synology RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ are built around the AMD Ryzen V1500B processor. This means that users can see up to 3.6x higher compute performance, and better performance overall. Users can configure the units with up to 32GB of DDR4 ECC memory. Both come with a PCIe slot that enables a 10GbE NIC or NVMe cache similar to Synology E10M20-T1.
Physically the units have a height of 2U but only take up half the depth. This makes them more appealing to constrained spaces. And like all things Synology, the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ use the company’s award-winning OS, Synology DSM.
