Dell Precision 7865 Uses AMD Threadripper Pro 5000 WX Series

Dell’s new Precision 7865 is one of the first major workstations sporting AMD’s Threadripper Pro WX 5000 series processors. Sporting up to 64 cores, this will be one of the world’s fastest single-CPU workstation towers.

Dell’s new Precision 7865 is one of the first major workstations sporting AMD’s Threadripper Pro WX 5000 series processors. Sporting up to 64 cores, this will be one of the world’s fastest single-CPU workstation towers.

The Precision 7865 directly competes with Lenovo’s ThinkStation P620 , which we reviewed with acclaim, and the Supermicro A+ SuperWorkstation 5014A-TT. The Threadripper Pro WX 5000 replaces the Threadripper Pro WX 3000. The 64-core Threadripper Pro 5995WX is the top choice, a 128-thread monster with a 2.7GHz base clock, a 4.5GHz Boost clock, and a 280-watt thermal design power (TDP) rating. There are also options for 12, 16, 24, and 32 cores.

The Precision 7865 accepts up to 1TB of DDR4 ECC memory, 56TB of storage, and optional Thunderbolt 3 and WiFi. It accepts two 300-watt graphics cards up to the 32GB AMD Radeon Pro W6800 or the 48GB Nvidia RTX A6000. As expected, the Precision 7865 carries ISV certifications. Onboard networking includes 1GbE and 10GbE and built-in AMD PRO out-of-band management.

More has gone into the Precision 7865 than just a hardware refresh. Though it resembles earlier Precision towers, it’s 14% smaller than the Precision 7820. Dell says the Precision 7865 is designed for upgradeability; a tool-less interior and color-coded components make for convenient servicing. The chassis is lockable and has intrusion detection. Other exterior features include front-accessible and lockable storage and carrying handles.

The Precision 7865’s full specifications are as follows.

Processor Up to AMD Threadripper Pro 5995WX (64-core/128-thread, 2.7 to 4.5GHz, 280-watt TDP). Other options include 12, 16, 24, and 32-cores.
