Today, Dell Technologies announced the release of version 9 of their proprietary thin client operating system, ThinOS 9. Dell Technologies is the parent company of Dell and Dell EMC since Dell acquired EMC in 2015. Dell was founded in 1984 and is one of the most well-known computer manufacturers.

The latest version of Dell’s proprietary thin client operating system comes out twenty years since the initial release of Dell’s ThinOS. ThinOS 9.0 supports all of their current crop of thin client appliances; Wyse 3040, Wyse 5070, Wyse 5470, and Wyse 5470 mobile. Curiously, Dell has made some changes to authentication and security support. Though a bit confusing, the company comes it up as thus: ThinOS 9 supports MFA at ThinOS Broker SignOn using LDAP, RSA+LDAP, SMS passcode, DUO, OKTA, Citrix NetScaler Gateway LDAP+RSA, SAML/Azure MFA authentication (Citrix ADC gateway), Citrix ADC OTP and Biometric authentication using TouchID .Caradigm SSO was removed since this was purchased by Imprivata and is being phased out, and Secure Matrix support had extremely low customer attach rates and lacked the business justification to be carried into ThinOS 9.

In an even more curious decision, Dell seems to have chosen to splinter support for server environments across several versions of their operating system. The good news here is that 9.0 improves support for Citrix with the addition of support for Citrix Workspace and SaaS/Webapps with SSO to their existing support for Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. Unfortunately, Dell is delaying support for their own VMware Horizon Client until a future release. Likewise, anyone using Wyse ThinOS 8.6 with PCoIP to access Amazon Workspaces will be unable to upgrade to the new version. In happier news, keyboard and Linux enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that Dell is stepping up their keyboard layout game by adding support for Unicode keyboard layout mapping and dynamic keyboard layout synchronization with Windows VDA.
