EMC has announced a suite of enhancements to the EMC Atmos Cloud platform for cloud storage environments, including new Atmos Cloud Accelerators that make it easier to move data in and out of Atmos-powered cloud storage. Each Atmos cloud provides hundreds of thousands of subscribers access to data powered by over 40 global service providers in more than 70 locations.
EMC has announced a suite of enhancements to the EMC Atmos Cloud platform for cloud storage environments, including new Atmos Cloud Accelerators that make it easier to move data in and out of Atmos-powered cloud storage. Each Atmos cloud provides hundreds of thousands of subscribers access to data powered by over 40 global service providers in more than 70 locations.
According the 451 Group’s April 2012 “Market Monitor Snapshot: Storage-as-a-Service”, the public cloud storage services market is projected grow to almost $6 billion by 2015 with a CAGR of 47%. Increasing mobile device use, cloud-based application development, and the rise of Big Data and public cloud use will continue to bring new requirements for cloud storage platforms like EMC Atmos.
The updated Atmos will allow clients to manage a 100 PB cloud as a single system across distributed sites with greater than 50 percent faster performance for large objects than previous Atmos solutions; improved system visibility with expanded monitoring for globally distributed storage environments; and 90 percent reduced upgrade time. The Atmos strategy is to present scalable object storage as essential enterprase infrastructure to manage future scale, performance and access requirements. Cloud Accelerators now enable users to work with Atmos in their native environment, expand functionality for developers, and make it easier to move legacy applications to the cloud.
Atmos Scalability
- New networking enhancements deliver greater than 50 percent faster read and write performance for large objects with new segmentation and security features to separate management and data traffic for users and administrators.
- New EMC Event Manager improves system visibility provides enhanced alerting and aggregated logging at the system, data center and node level while providing near real-time visibility into overall system activity and performance. Historical monitoring information has been expanded to include visibility at the year, week and hour level.
- New upgrade technology speeds node upgrades in distributed environments by 90 percent while non-disruptive service upgrade capabilities enable businesses to remain accessible.
Atmos Cloud Accelerators
- End users have new options to access an Atmos cloud from their native environment including Google Chrome and HTML5 to complement the existing Firefox tool. Atmos GeoDrive for Windows is now internationalized to support worldwide languages for end users.
- Developers have new Atmos APIs, including secure single-use access for anonymous users, capacity management APIs to enable quotas, and the ability to set the identifier for an Atmos object. The Atmos Software Development Kit (SDK) is expanded to include Google Android support.
- New tools to move traditional applications and their content into a cloud environment: Customers with Centera integrated applications can carry forward Centera metadata into an Atmos cloud and apply Atmos data lifecycle policies based on this metadata; AtmosSync, a new open-source migration tool, accelerates migration of file system content to the cloud.
Availability
New EMC Atmos product enhancements are expected to be available in the second half of 2012.
